Man Utd poised to offer new deal to experienced winger
Despite voices from all quarters asking the Manchester United
administration to get rid of the club’s under-performing wingers in
Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, the Premier League Champions
are keen to start contract talks with Valencia to avoid losing him for
cheap next summer, reports the Mirror.
Valencia has been one of United’s better performers this season and
has found favour with manager David Moyes due to his excellent work
ethic. The Ecuadorian has been a regular in an otherwise changing
midfield and has already tripled his goal tally from last season when he
managed just a solitary goal.
The 28-year old winger is one of the lower earners at Old Trafford and could seek a transfer in the summer when he will enter into the last year of his contract. United want to open talks over a new deal that could see Valencia earn at par with his fellow wingers and allow the club to sell him for an acceptable fee.
The former Wigan winger won the club’s Player of the Year award in 2012 but saw his form dip dramatically last season. Valencia gave up the No.7 jersey to return to his old No.25 one this season and has since seen a marked improvement. However, question marks still remain over his United future with Moyes keen to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window and next summer.
